红色因其高贵被赞为生命之色。但真正的生命之色不是红色。红色是暴力的象征，是破碎，重组并被公之于众的生命。如果红色真是生命之色，那唯一的条件就是不被人所见。一旦进入视野，红色就成为被颠覆的生命之色，成为背叛和废弃之举。红色是生命的秘密，不是生命的宣言。红色是这样的一样东西，其价值在于隐密，其才能要被隐藏。真正的生命之色是体色，是掩盖着的红色，是隐而不露的跳动着的心脏的颜色，是不被人所见的一抹血红。如此艳丽，如此浅淡，如此柔和，如此绚烂，生命之色不敌世上所有的颜色。它的美在于它色白，但逊于奶；色褐，但浅于土；色红，但弱于黎明和黄昏。它纯净透明，但不如百合色。它有所有纯色隐含的那抹金色，但在我们这个纬度，这抹金色却难以被察觉。事实上，在西西里的天空下，生命之色深于古老的象牙。但在英国薄雾弥漫的蓝色苍穹下，在伦敦地平线温暖的灰色中，它如六月末树篱中的浅色蔷薇一样，娇嫩绯红，色调单一，如群星闪耀。

Red has been praised for its nobility as the color of life. But the true color of life is not red. It is the symbol of violence, or of life broken, edited and published.Or if red is indeed the color of life, it is so only on condition it that it is not seen. Once truly visible, red is the color of life violated, and in the act of betrayal and of waste. Red is the secret of life, and not the manifestation thereof. It is one of the things the value of which is secrecy, one of the talents that are to be hidden in a napkin. The true color of life is the color of the body, the color of the covered red, the implicit and not the explicitred of the living heart and the pulses. It is the modest color of the unpublished blood. So bright, so light, so soft, so mingled, the gentle color of the life is outdone by all the colors of the world. Its very beauty is that it is white, but less white than milk; brown, but less brown than earth; red,but less red than dawn and sunset. It is lucid, but less lucid than the colorof lilies. It has the hint of gold that is in all fine color, but in our latitudes the hint is almost elusive. Under Sicilian skies, indeed, life is deeper than old ivory; but under the misty blue of the English zenith, and the warm gray of the London horizon, it is as delicately flushed as the paler wildroses, flat as stars, in the hedges of the end of June.
