真正的高贵

        在风平浪静的大海上，每个人都是水手。

        但只有阳光没有阴影，只有欢乐没有痛苦，根本就不是生活。以最幸福的人为例，他的生活也是一团乱麻。痛苦与幸福交替出现，使他们时悲时喜。即使死亡本身都会使生活更加可爱。在悲伤与失落的时刻，人们才最冷静，才最接近真实的自己。

        在纷扰的尘世中，性格比才智更起作用，心灵比头脑更起作用，适度的自控，耐心和纪律比天才更起作用。

        我一直认为内心生活越严谨的人，外在生活就越简朴。在一个铺张浪费的时代，我想向世人展示人类真正的需求其实很少。

        真正的忏悔是后悔自己的过失，达到不再重复的程度。超越他人没什么高贵可言，真正的高贵是超越从前的自己。

True nobility

In a calm sea every man is a pilot.

But all sunshine without shade, all pleasure without pain, is not life at all.Take the lot of the happiest - it is a tangled yarn. Bereavements and blessings, one following another, make us sad and blessed by turns. Even death itself makes life more loving. Men come closest to their true selves in the sober moments of life, under the shadows of sorrow and loss.   

In the affairs of life or of business, itis not intellect that tells so much as character, not brains so much as heart,not genius so much as self-control, patience, and discipline, regulated by judgment.

I have always believed that the man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to live more simply without. In an age of extravagance and waste, I wishI could show to the world how few the real wants of humanity are.

To regret one's errors to the point of not repeating them is true repentance. There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self.
